A new slice of the adtech market is trying to turn AI search anxiety into software spend. The pitch is simple enough: as consumers increasingly ask chatbots and AI-powered search products what to buy, where to go or which brand to trust, marketers need tools that tell them whether they are showing up in those answers.
But the sales story is starting to meet a tougher reality. Marketers are questioning whether AI visibility tools are worth the money, especially when the results can be inconsistent, hard to reproduce and even harder to tie back to business impact.
That skepticism matters because the category has emerged fast. Vendors are offering dashboards, rankings, share-of-voice views and optimization advice designed to help brands understand how they appear across generative interfaces. In theory, that gives marketing teams a way to prepare for a world where discovery happens inside AI summaries instead of traditional blue links.
In practice, many buyers are finding that the picture is messy.
Generative AI systems do not behave like classic search engines. Responses can change from one prompt to the next. The same question can produce different answers depending on phrasing, context, location, timing or the model being used. That creates a measurement problem right at the heart of these tools: if the output is fluid, what exactly counts as a stable ranking?
That does not mean the concern is overblown. Marketers have good reason to pay attention to AI-powered discovery. The skepticism also highlights a broader pattern in adtech. New environments tend to produce new measurement layers before standards fully mature. We saw versions of that in social, programmatic, retail media and connected TV. The opportunity may be real, but the first wave of tools often arrives before buyers have a common framework for judging performance.
That appears to be happening again with AI visibility. Marketers do not just want to know whether their brand name appeared in an answer. They want to understand why, how consistently, against which competitors and with what downstream effect. If a tool cannot move beyond snapshots into something more durable, it risks being treated as a monitoring novelty rather than a core platform.
Another challenge is control. In classic SEO, marketers have years of practice around technical fixes, content improvements and authority signals. AI answer optimization is less settled. Brands can update product pages, refine content, strengthen data structure and improve factual consistency across the web, but the exact relationship between those efforts and AI outputs is still developing. That uncertainty makes it harder for vendors to promise repeatable wins.
None of this means marketers are ignoring the space. More likely, they are moving into a cautious testing phase. That means pilots instead of broad commitments, selective use cases instead of full-scale rollouts and tighter scrutiny around pricing. Some teams will keep experimenting because they do not want to be caught flat-footed if AI assistants become a major discovery channel. But curiosity is no longer the same as automatic budget approval.
